Gay Sheep

For THE NEW YORK TIMES

In Löhne, Westphalia, Michael Stücke is giving a second chance to rams that refuse to mate with ewes. Gay rams on most farms would be sent to slaughter. Through his project, Rainbow Wool, Stücke rescues these "male-oriented" sheep, shears their wool, and turns it into a symbol of compassion and pride. The wool will soon appear in a fashion collaboration with designer Michael Schmidt and Grindr, bringing the story of these unconventional flocks from quiet pastures to a global audience.
